Several years ago I had just graduated from college and suddenly found myself with more free time than I could reasonably use. I knew I should keep creating art; no sense in getting rusty while trying to land a professional gig. I had always relied heavily on music for inspiration. Just hearing a song could conjure up clear images, moods, and colors in my minds eye. In one class in school, not only did I manage to stretch the bounds of an assignment to illustrate a classic rock song, but got fellow students to do it as well.
One day in the midst of frantically applying to jobs, the song "Back In The USSR" came on from a playlist I had running in the background. I had always loved the song and thought it had great imagery. Inspiration had struck. A few days later I had completed an illustration based on it.
It was not going to end there though. After all, every one of their songs had great imagery, storytelling, and mood. The notion struck me: why not do all of them? An image for each song. An illustration that translates the music into visuals. All 186 songs that they wrote and officially released from 1963 to 1970.
I am far from finished but won't stop until I am.
